SmalleyCorrugated springs SSR-N
SSR-N narrow-section single-turn corrugated springs were originally manufactured to preload seals in telescopic hydraulic cylinders. They are now used in other applications, typically where working space is at a premium. The SSR-N series of corrugated springs is designed to fit into a bore with only slight clamping to ensure perfect concentricity between the spring and the assembly.
These corrugated springs offer a number of advantages over stamped products.
Firstly, they allow radial expansion, or an increase in diameter without the locking or snagging normally associated with stamped corrugated washers.
In addition to this main advantage, they are also more precise, with a stiffness tolerance 50% greater than that of stamped parts.
Manufactured from pre-tempered materials, they also present no risk of deformation during any hardening heat treatment. By comparison, the manufacturing processes for corrugated stamped washers can lead to problems such as fatigue cracking and less precise, less even loading between springs.
Corrugated springs are available in two types: Gap and Overlap.
The Gap type is open to maintain free space between the ends, while the Overlap type has overlapping ends. As a result, the ends can move in an arc as the outer diameter of the spring increases during compression.
They work accurately and reliably for short deflections and low to medium forces. They are available in carbon steel or 17-7PH stainless steel. SSR-N corrugated spring stiffness is measured in lb/in.1lb = 4.448N1 inch = 25.4mm
As the spring is compressed, the external and internal diameter increase until the external diameter enters into contact with the bore.
Wave springs are available in carbon steel and stainless steel, in diameters from 3.250” to 7.750”.
